How do I evaluate (analyze) a plan?

Any plan that has been drawn in SeaSketch may be tied to an analytic (also called a geoprocessing script) and a report. Reports can tell you something about the potential consequences of your plan. For example, you may choose to draw (sketch) a new shipping lane and then analyze the potential consequences of that design in terms of whale strikes or costs to the shipping industry.

You may analyze plans that you have drawn or you may analyze plans that others have drawn and shared in a discussion forum. To analyze a plan that you have drawn, highlight the name of the plan under the "My Plans" tab, then click "View Attributes and Reports".

This action will trigger a report. Sometimes, the report is very simple and simply shows you the attributes (e.g., a name and description) that were assigned to the sketch. Other times, sketches may be intersected with other data layers (e.g., the distribution of habitat, species, energy, human activities) to give you detailed information about the consequences of your design.

Here is an example of a report that intersects the sketch of a shipping lane called "Alternative Shipping Lane" with data that describes the distribution of whale sightings, oil platforms, Distance and Fuel Costs, and sensitive blue whale habitat. .

Notice the icons at the top of the report: one that looks like a gear, one that looks like two pages with an arrow pointing to the left, and one that looks like an "X".

Clicking on the one in the middle will shift your report to the left and reveal the Data Layers, My Plans and Participate Tabs. This is handy if you want to then choose another report to compare side-by-side with this one.

To compare the tradeoffs between designs, highlight another plan and click "View Attributes and Reports" as you did above.

Watch the following video to see how plans may be analyzed and compared with each other.
