What browser version am I using?

When submitting a help request on the SeaSketch website, or troubleshooting on your own, it is helpful to know what web browser you are using.  You are likely using:
  • Chrome   [Note: This is the best browser to use in the administrative interface.]
  • Firefox
  • Safari
  • or, Internet Explorer.  [Note: Please use IE 10 if you choose Internet Explorer.]
These are all web browsers, specific software applications that you use to access the internet.

But for each browser there is also a specific version that you have downloaded, or that came on your computer.  The steps to find out your browser version are a little different for each web browser, and whether you are accessing from a computer using an OS X or Windows operating system (usually Apple computer or other PC respectively).

On a Mac
(OS X), you can find the version number by finding the 'About' page for the web browser.
  • With the browser open, click the bolded browser name in the top left corner of your computer screen, just right of the apple icon [for example, 'Chrome'].
  • In the drop down menu, select the 'About page [for example, 'About Google Chrome'].  It is often the first entry in the drop down menu.
  • This will either bring up a new web page or small window that lists the version number.

On a PC (Windows), you can find the version number by finding the 'About' page for the web browser, which may be within a 'Help' menu.  You will access the 'About' page from within the browser window.
  • Open your browser, and find the main menu or 'Help' menu within the browser window. The 'About' page is within one of these lists. HINT: The main menu is often marked by the name of the browser or a list icon near the top of the browser window.  A 'Help' window may be named 'Help' or be marked by a '?'.
  • If you click open a main or help menu, select the 'About' page from the drop down menu.  This will either bring up a new web page or small window that lists the version number.
  • If the 'About' page is not listed in the drop down menu, try selecting 'Help' from the main menu list.  When you click 'Help', another drop down menu will appear, where you can select the 'About' page.  This will either bring up a new web page or small window that lists the version number.

If you are still unable to find the 'About' page and determine the version number of the browser you are using, try looking at the more browser specific directions below.  Unfortunately, as versions are updated, some details may change, and your browser may not be organized in the same way as the versions used to develop these directions.  Just remember, find the 'About' page!

Chrome:
On an Apple computerafter opening the browser, you will see the bolded word 'Chrome' in the top left corner of your screen, just right of the apple icon.  Click, to access the drop down menu, and select the first entry, 'About Google Chrome'.  This will open a web page with the version number listed.

On a PC, click on the list icon at the top right corner of the browser window, just right of the star icon in the URL bar.  Then, select 'About Google Chrome' toward the bottom of the drop down menu.  This will open a web page with the version number listed.

Firefox:
On an Apple computer, click on the bolded word 'Firefox' in the top left corner of the computer screen, just right of the apple icon.  Select the first entry of the drop down menu, 'About Firefox'. This will open a small window that lists the version number.

On a PC, click on the 'Firefox' tab at the top left of the browser window.  Select 'Help' at the bottom of the right column of the drop down menu, then select 'About Firefox'.  A small window will appear with the version number listed.

Safari:
On an Apple computer, click on the bolded word 'Safari' in the top left corner of your screen, just right of the apple icon.  Select the first entry of the drop down menu, 'About Safari'.  This will open a small window that lists the version number.

Do not use Safari on Windows, only OS X.

Internet Explorer
On a PC, click on the '?' help icon in the top right corner of the browser window, just right of the 'Tools' drop down menu.  Select 'About Internet Explorer' at the bottom of the drop down menu.  This will open a small window that lists the specific version number.

Only use version 9 or higher.  Previous version will not support all SeaSketch function.
